Great Price "Little Giant 5-APCP Automatic Pool Cover Pump" for $154.57 Today
I agree with the other reviewer and these people must not know how to maintain pumps. These things are practically bulletproof if you know how to use them.
I have been putting it on my cover to drain it and removing it as well and I've had this pump for 5 years.
This isn't a if I may borrow a slogan from a corny infomercial "set it and forget it" product. The diaphragm switch is only there to stop the pump when it's done pumping to prevent it from running dry. It's NOT there so you can leave the pump plugged in all winter.
If a shaft seal type pump like this one is run dry for an extended period. The seal will be destroyed and the lubricating oil will be lost into the water you're pumping as the original poster described. A great way for this to happen is for the water level to rise and freeze the diaphragm switch leaving the pump in the on position pumping nothing which would cause instant pump death.
A quote from the manual which these reviewers obviously didn't read:
"Remove the pump when conditions will cause water to freeze.
Freezing water may result in rupture to the pump and/or switch
enclosure, and could result in possible electrical short."
This goes for ANY pump of ANY design from ANY maker.
If you want to buy a pump you can run dry buy a magnetic driven one and please remember to remove it and keep it from freezing.

Customer Review
Great pump! - Jeffrey L. Martin - Memphis, TN
I've had a smaller pump to rid the pool cover of standing water during the winter months, but the Little Giant is fast and reliable. I like the option of using the float switch. I don't have to worry about walking away and forgetting to turn it off since the float switch will turn the unit off at a low water level. Sturdy and good for the job.
They do not like water - Paul J. Beisel - New Jersey
I have to agree with many of the other posts. They only last 1-2 years. I am looking for something that last longer - even in cold winters etc. Many of the folks talk about taking the pump out of the water if "freezing conditions are present" - If the pump actually pumped out all the water, it wouldn't be sitting in water when temps got below freezing. Stupid design if a freeze caused it to stop working. Are you gonna run out every time the temp drops below freezing and remove your pump? Might as well, wrap it in a baby blanket and store it in a climate controlled room. Good luck.
